History of Mosty

Mosty was known from the 15th century. At that point in time it was already quite a big trade settlement which was located at the intersection of trade ways; the water route on Neman and overland from Brest to Vilnius. Mosty was first mentioned in historical documents as the town and the center of the volost of Grodno povet in 1486. According to royal diplomas from the early 17th century to the late 17th century, Mosty received limited city liberties. The diploma of 1633 allowed the holding of weekly auctions and two annual fairs. After the 3rd partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795, Mosty became a part of the Russian Empire. From 1921 to 1939 the city was in possession of Poland and in 1939 it became a part of BSSR.

Mosty had a favorable site that promoted the development of crafts and trade. Weekly markets and fairs were held here.
