Mexican Honorary Consulate Opens in Minsk

Mexican flag was raised above the newly inaugurated consulate in Minsk. The formal opening ceremony took place on March, 17th.

Rubén Alberto Beltrán Guerrero, the Mexican Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Russian Federation with concurrent accreditation to Belarus flew to Minsk to participate in the opening together with Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yevgeny Shestakov. Mr. Bertran expressed his best wishes to the newly appointed Honorary Consul and emphasized the importance of the Honorary Consulate as a means of promoting Belarusian-Mexican cooperation in three main areas: trade&investment, tourism and culture.

The choice of Honorary Consul undoubtedly pleased Belarusian MFA. The position of Mexican representative is occupied by a Belarusian businessman Yuri Morozov, a participant of governmental delegations to international economic forums, a former member of House of Representatives.

The Consulate will work on strengthening the relations between the two countries, providing consular help to Mexican citizens in Belarus and stimulating economic and commercial cooperation.
Currently Belarus exports a limited range of goods to Mexico – mostly potash fertilizers, metal products and tires and imports fruit, coffee and electronic equipment. Yevgeny Shestakov noted that Belarus should also try to enter the competitive Mexican market with Belarusian complex mechanical production, machinery, tractors and petrochemical products. With this in view, one of the forthcoming joint events is going to be a visit of a Mexican business delegation to Belarus, which is planned for July-September 2016.

The consulate is situated in the middle of the city, on Kirova street, 8 and is open to visitors from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Diplomatic Relations between the Republic of Belarus and the United Mexican States were established in 1992. Since then, the Mexican Ambassadors to Belarus have resided in Moscow. Belarus-Mexican friendship group was created in Mexican parliament in 2014, followed by Members of Parliament sharing the plans to appoint the Honorary Consul to Belarus in 2015.

Starting from 2014 Belarus experiences an indirect presence of Mexican capital – one of the companies of Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim bought the controlling interest in Telecom Austria, which is the owner of the biggest Belarusian mobile phone operator Velcom. Belarusian export to Mexico in 2015 amounted to $4,2million, import ̶ to $37,9million.
